About Lifeline
The Lifeline is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program, which means it is a government funded public benefit program. It aims to make communications services more affordable for low-income consumers. Through participating providers, the Lifeline service provides subscribers a discount on monthly telephone service.
The program is available to eligible low-income consumers in every state, territory, commonwealth, and on Tribal lands. It provides a free phone for all qualifying low-income consumers to ensure they can connect to jobs, family and emergency services. Lifeline is part of the Universal Service Fund and is administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC).
Eligibility
As per the new guidelines on eligibility, individuals can qualify for the Lifeline program if their Income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. They can also qualify if participating in any of the following assistance programs:
• Medicaid
• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP)
• Supplemental Security Income
• Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
